Activated Sludge Toxicity Mitigation Using a Respirometric Measurement

چکیده
This paper presents the results of an evaluation of a toxicity mitigation control strategy using the IWA simulation benchmark (Copp et al., 2002; Copp, 2001). The aim of the proposed strategy is to minimise the impact of a toxic influent shock load on process performance. To do this, the strategy makes use of a respiration rate measurement to detect toxic events and uses an equalisation tank to store toxic influent. A defined control algorithm specific for the benchmark plant was developed and is used to reintroduce the stored influent back into the process stream once the influent is deemed non-toxic. The results of the simulations indicate that the impact of the toxicant can be significantly mitigated through the use of off-line storage and reintroduction of suspected influent. Inhibition of activated sludge respiration by heavy metals
Inhibition of the respiration microbial activity in the activated sludge caused by heavy metal concentrations (Cr, Cd, Cu and Ni) was studied by means of respirometric method using Strathtox respirometer (Strathkelvin Glasgow). The studied sludge samples were obtained from the two waste water treatment plants with different types of pollution (municipal waste water and domestic waste water). Key...
متن کاملApplication of biosensors in wastewater treatment
“Biosensors” are defined as sensors that allow the measurement and interpretation of the biological response of activated sludge to a known disturbance. The purpose of “biosensing” the activated sludge, on-line at the full-scale plant or off-line in lab-scale tests, is to obtain specific information about one or several activated sludge processes. This information can serve as plant performance...
متن کاملModelling of activated sludge process kinetics using a combination of hybrid respirometric and titrimetric data
Knowledge of activated sludge biokinetic parameters is important to simulate the behaviour of an activated sludge plant with the commonly used IAWQ models (e.g. Henze et al., 1987). Batch experiments using pulse substrate additions in a small bioreactor are often applied to collect data about activated sludge behaviour. However, many of the experiments that were designed in the past suffer from...
متن کاملModel-based Interpretation of Titrimetric Data to Estimate Aerobic Carbon Source Degradation Kinetics
Combined respirometric – titrimetric data are presented, resulting from aerobic batch degradation experiments in activated sludge with acetate and dextrose as a substrate. A model including substrate uptake, CO2 production and NH3 uptake for biomass growth is proposed to describe the titrimetric data. Combining respirometric and titrimetric data is more informative compared to the separate data...
متن کاملApplication of a Hybrid Respirometric Technique to the Characterization of an Industrial Wastewater
Two respirometric principles are combined in an experimental setup based on a laboratory scale batch reactor and applied to the characterization of activated sludge and wastewater. In the first respirometric principle the temporary disturbance of the dissolved oxygen concentration in the reactor is used to estimate the respiration rate. To this end, the oxygen mass-transfer must be calculated a...
